Color Commentary

Sportscaster cards were popular nerd status symbols in the late 70s - think Google for a 10 year old fan circa 1979. Full of stats and fun facts, they were larger (12cm x 16cm) and more substantial than baseball cards, and managed to cover an international array of sports, complete with Illuminati-level symbology for the pro collector. Some recent eBay "research" scored me the North American Cycling set. (The French series is much larger and more comprehensive, and is now on my list of "things-I-need-to-buy-but-not-really").

It's great to see new photos of familiar faces from the glory days, but what makes Sportscaster cards stand out is the esoteric data that often pops up in the "Beyond Sports" category.

See the rest of the set here. I'm told that there are a few missing, but the completist in me (and eBay) will see that that is remedied ASAP.

They were actually subscription based.. like time/life books. I think with an ad on tv or sports illustrated. Your first month came with a plastic holder box and a starter set, then every month a new sport came until you cancelled.. or had them all?

Steven - that's right! I had completely forgotten about that aspect. Good memory.
